It’s been a wild ride these last 60 days. Between juggling demo installs and managing my (temporarily!) empty storage, a few things really stood out.

The Pragmata Phenomenon

I’ll be honest: I wasn’t sure if Pragmata was ever actually going to come out. But it didn’t just release; it exploded. Pragmata topped 2 million sales in just 16 days, and after spending time with the demo, I totally get why. It inspired a whole new segment for this Substack because it proved that a great demo is the ultimate way to show gamers what they’re paying for.

The Tale of Two Kains

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times for Legacy of Kain fans. The Defiance Remaster is a love letter to the original—it doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel, it just gets out of the way and lets the gothic atmosphere shine. Even with its original flaws, it’s a solid play.

On the flip side, Legacy of Kain: Ascendance has been a heartbreak. It’s sitting with overwhelmingly negative reviews on Steam, with players calling it a lackluster disaster. We deserved better.

for the inspiration to have voiceovers with games background music or ambient sounds. As you know I have been experimenting with my voice on this blog, as well as different ways to present my thoughts. So it’s no surprise this clicked for me, why not give you the vibe of the game while you read or listen to the article. It lets me keep the series moving without the crushing pressure of full video production.

So, without further ado lets get into it and talk about the moon.

The Narrative Gem: Pragmata

I honestly wasn’t sure I’d ever get the opportunity to play this demo, but after some last minute tweaking of my system i was finally able to get the demo to run. Boy I’m officially a believer. Pragmata is currently the quietest giant on the horizon, set to launch this April 17th. While the AAA hype machine is strangely silent, the demo has already cleared 2 million downloads, and for good reason it’s phenomenal.

A Lunar Ghost Town

The game immediately captures a specific, meditative sense of isolation. You’re Hugh, an astronaut navigating a derelict Lunar research center, but you aren’t alone. You’re accompanied by Diana, a young girl with mysterious powers. The dialogue between Hugh, Diana, and the base’s AI keeps the “empty space” of the moon from feeling too hollow. It’s atmospheric, haunting, and visually crisp, pushing even high-end systems to their limits.

The Great Input Debate

One of the most tactical takeaways from my time with the demo is that your choice of hardware matters. Director Cho Yonghee recently urged players to use this demo as a litmus test for their preferred controls.

The keyboard Hustle: Hacking is the heart of the combat system. On a Keyboard and Mouse, it’s a high-stakes precision game as i found out using a standard mouse. My reccomendation would be to have a mouse with extra side buttons to assign certain triggers because the scroll wheel can be cumbersome at times.
The Controller Edge: Interestingly, Cho Yonghee noted that for many, the D-pad on a controller feels faster and less restrictive. In a recent interview with PC Gamer, he admitted: “There are some people who find keyboard and mouse too tricky... we’ve tried to make sure that whichever one is your preference... you get a great experience either way.”

As you progress you gain skills that slow down time, which is a blessing because trying to outmaneuver a giant mech while inputting complex hacking combinations can feel brutal and jarring even if you found your flow.

The “Uncanny” New York

There’s a specific stage in the game that looks like a distorted, fever-dream version of New York. While some early viewers thought it looked “AI-generated,” the developers at Capcom actually did that on purpose, painstakingly.

As reported by Automaton Media, the team intentionally “glitched” the world. You’ll see taxis sinking into floors and buses sprouting from walls. It’s meant to look like an imperfect, synthetic facsimile created by a corrupted AI. It’s surrealist and psychedelic, adding a layer of unease that makes the setting feel truly unique.

My Verdict: A Risk Worth Taking

I desperately want Pragmata to succeed. We rarely see big studios take a swing on a brand new IP anymore, especially one this tactile and weird. It’s a bold departure from the standard sci-fi shooter, and despite the “friction” of its complex hacking systems, it feels like it has a soul.

After seven days of non-stop discovery, the dust has finally settled, and I’ve surfaced with a curated selection of what actually mattered. Instead of just chasing the trending tab, I’ve divided this wrap-up into three distinct sections: the hidden gems discovered through direct social media callouts, the ambitious titles that personally piqued my interest (and occasionally broke my computer), and a data-driven look at the games that truly conquered the charts.

The Social Media Discoveries

These are the games that landed in my lap after I reached out to the developer community on social media. Eight developers responded with some of the most creative, high-passion projects I saw all week. These aren’t just games; they are labors of love that deserve a spot on your wishlist.

Modulus: A meditative factory automation game where you aren’t just building machines, but designing the modules that make them up to fulfill orders for the “Grand Neural Network.” It’s low-pressure, no-combat, and surprisingly crunchy in its logic puzzles.
Spellsy: A cozy-but-clever word puzzle game where you clear grids by spelling words, using shifting tile mechanics like explosions and slides to solve handcrafted levels. It’s perfect for the Mac-friendly crowd looking for a brain-tickler without the stress of a timer.
Black Zen White: Mac Friendly! A contemplative 2D puzzle platformer inspired by East Asian ink paintings where the world flips between black and white versions every 10 seconds. You’ll need to master time-bending abilities and interact with unusual creatures to navigate this surreal, hand-drawn journey.
Blades, Bows and Magic: Mac Friendly! A minimalist tactical card battler where a simple Rock-Paper-Scissors core (Warrior-Archer-Mage) evolves into deep strategy through card placement and champion powers. It’s a tactile experience that turns every duel into a high-stakes chess match.
Sugar Shatter: A psychedelic “breakout fighting game” where you hit candy balls to smash bricks faster than your opponent in a competitive tournament across Candyland. It’s high-energy, weird, and features a surprisingly deep campaign mode about the personal struggles of its sugary cast.
Mermeow: A serene idle creature collector where you hatch “Mermeows” (cat mermaids, obviously) and upgrade lush, hand-drawn lake habitats. It’s the ultimate meditative “chill out” game—perfect for having open in a corner of your screen while the world feels a bit too loud.
Kuentame: This is a truly bizarre, top-down platformer that completely reimagines how we move in 3D space. Instead of a standard side-scroller, you navigate 360-degree environments that feel like a psychedelic fever dream, all while engaging in high-intensity bullet hell combat against "fractal monsters." The aesthetic is what really grabs you—it uses an intentionally "off-kilter" pre-rendered 90s CGI style that mirrors its unsettling plot about the total collapse of human communication and distorted fairytales.
COLORNOVA: Mac Friendly! This is a high-octane, color-switching arcade shooter that is all about rhythm and twitch reflexes. You pilot one of six devastating ships, matching your weapon's color to your enemies to blast through waves of threats and save your home planet from total destruction. It feels incredibly polished with its "Supernova" power-up system and local co-op support, making it a perfect pick for anyone who loves that classic "just one more round" arcade loop on their MacBook.

Demos That Piqued My Interest

If you missed my early dive into the first batch of Next Fest treasures, you can catch up on those 12 gems right here. Since that post, I’ve found even more titles that have “Future Hit” written all over them.

Marathon: Bungie makes a splash with the neon-soaked titan that dominated the entire festival, and for good reason. It’s a sci-fi extraction shooter that looks like a high-fashion, graphic design fever dream. You play as a "Runner," scavenging for loot and survival in a world that feels both hauntingly alien and strikingly bold with its high-contrast aesthetic. While it’s definitely on the "mainstream" end of our radar, the sheer mechanical polish and the brutal, high-stakes tension of a successful extraction is, quite frankly, enough to make even a dedicated indie-lover like me take notice.
Shanty Town: This isn’t your typical “perfect grid” city builder; it’s a tactile, organic dive into the beautiful chaos of vertical urban sprawl. You’re tasked with managing a living, breathing settlement where every scrap of resource counts and the “shanty” aesthetic provides a gritty, lived-in atmosphere that most sterile sims lack. It’s a crunchy, meditative experience for anyone who finds beauty in the messy reality of a town built piece-by-piece rather than a pre-planned utopia.
Pragmata: This was the mystery of the week for me. I tried so hard to run the demo, but constant errors kept me from the full experience. Interestingly, the player numbers were quite low—it’s possible the hardware requirements were just too brutal for most, or it fell victim to other demos that had a head start.
Outbound: Think “cozy survival” but in a customizable camper van. It’s meditative, tactile, and exactly the kind of game you want to lose a weekend in.
John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando: This was 80s action hero awesome. It’s loud, it’s gore-filled, and it feels like a playable cult classic horror movie.
SpaceCraft: A tactical sim that manages to make the vastness of space feel both atmospheric and haunting.
Windrose: A pirate survival game that feels incredibly tactile—it’s no surprise this one climbed the charts so quickly.
Hozy: A surrealist exploration title that kept me on edge with its unsettling, dreamlike atmosphere.
Wild West Pioneers: A frontier survival-builder that trades grit for deep, engaging management loops.

The Chart Toppers: The Kings of Next Fest

The data doesn’t lie. While we love our niche indies, some games simply operated on a different scale this past event. Marathon was the undisputed titan, towering over the competition with a peak that dwarfed everything else combined. However, looking at the mid-range of the charts, the diversity is actually quite encouraging.

My Thoughts & Feelings: The Next Fest Post-Mortem

When I step back and analyze this event, I have some mixed feelings. On one hand, the community was incredibly vibrant. I reached out to some devs on social media, and having 8 of them respond with such passion and creativity was a genuine highlight. I enjoyed playing their titles, and I urge you to download and wishlist them. There is a tangible sense of heart in each one that you just don’t get from most larger projects.

Of course I have some favorites within the list, but this about disovering a new gem outside your realm so I want You the audience to try these games because they deserve an even larger audience.

Besides these 8 titles, there were 9 other games that piqued my interest through the event, though not all of them had a smooth ride.I tried so hard to run Pragmata, but the demo errors kept me from experiencing the game. It was interesting to see that the game didn’t garner a large number of players over the course of the event. It could be that the game requirements were too high, or it fell victim to other demos that had a head start by launching early or resubmitting existing demo builds. It’s a reminder that even big names can get lost in the noise especially if the tech isn’t polished or the system requirements are very high.

When I step back and analyze everything, there is a feeling that the lines about what constitutes a “Next Fest demo” are starting to blur. Studios’ playtesting or resubmitting an existing demo are starting to crowd out people surfacing true gems. However, I don’t think this will be a problem in the long run as steam is starting to introduce more seasonal or theme-based events. In my opinion this could even out the playing field and give the “little guys” their own specific stage to shine on.

Have you seen the recent headlines? The industry is feeling a bit like a “glitch in the matrix” lately. We’ve got industry veterans like former Skyrim lead Bruce Nesmith suggesting that the $100 video game might be an inevitable, if risky, reality. He notes that while developers would be “wise” not to push prices higher, “gamers are a special breed” who will pay for what they truly want.

My take is what we “truly want” usually involves a finished product. While prices climb, the stability of big-budget gaming feels like it’s crumbling. Look at the recent news that Ubisoft has officially axed the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake alongside several other delays. It’s hard to justify a triple-digit price tag when legendary IPs are being shelved or stuck in “development hell” for years. Even when things do get announced, the hype often leads to a letdown. Just ask the Fallout fans who sat through a mysterious countdown timer only for it to reveal a television set reveal instead of the Fallout 3 or Fallout New Vegas remasters they were praying for.

Why does this matter for us? As the “Premium AAA Editions” start to look more like expensive gambles, the AA and Indie scene is winning the day. Completing the Tutorial: A Reflection on Year One of Dusty Gamer

How is your backlog looking right now? Mine is judging me as we close out 2025.

This is the final article for the year, and honestly? I’m feeling a little sentimental. Writing on Substack has been a hard but incredibly rewarding journey. I spent many days staring at a blinking cursor, overthinking my writing style, and wondering if anyone actually wanted to read the content I was making, especially the niche gaming market on Mac.

But we made it. So, before we boot up the “New Game” that is 2026, I wanted to create a save point and reflect on the grind, the loot, and the level-ups from the past year.

The Learning Curve

Let’s be real: finding a voice is tough. In those initial articles, I was constantly experimenting, trying to figure out how to present games without sounding like a press release. Researching games takes time, and diving into demos isn’t always quick.

I also set myself up for failure early on with a brutal schedule, trying to post consistently every Friday felt like playing on “Ultra Nightmare” mode. Once I relaxed that schedule, the process became enjoyable again. I found a flow. I could edit without panic. Lesson learned, Quality over crunch, always.

In the last few months i have gotten better at the process, but the mission remains to develop my voice into a master storyteller.

The Boss Fight: Video Editing

This year, I tried to introduce video to the Dusty Gamer workflow. Friends, let me tell you that was like a Dark Souls run for me.

I really struggled with the editing part. The amount of work required to chop up footage, sync audio, and make it watchable is something I didn’t expect to be so heavy. It felt like the first few months of my Substack start all over again, but times a thousand.

Despite the struggle (and my Mac Mini M2 Pro working overtime), I managed to produce two videos and a short. It’s not a full season of TV, but it’s a start(Please watch them):

The Mission: Building the Directory

The primary purpose of Dusty Gamer is to serve as a video game directory, a platform where Mac-friendly titles and hidden indie gems can shine.

In the new year, I intend to focus heavily on this. I want to build a platform where Indie devs and gamers can submit games. I want to make it easier for game devs to find an audience for their work, and I want to encourage gamers to try a game they would never have considered before. It’s ambitious, but the gaming community on Substack is already doing an outstanding job. For now, you can check out the Demo Drive Pack tab, where I’m contributing by collecting all the playable gold I find.

Expect more Play Diaries in 2026, too. I want to figure out a video flow that allows me to make shorter, punchier videos (5-7 minutes) without the pressure of a massive deadline. I still need to practice, so I hope you’ll stick around to see what sticks.

In the New year i would like to expand my writing capabilities as well as my audience. This can’t be done alone, so I am looking to host other writers on the blog or write for other blogs.

November 2025 Game Releases: Preview

November continues to be a hectic month for me, but I was still able to bring you a quick preview of the real treasures set for release this month.

The buzz around the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 today (November 14th, 2025) reminded me of a great discussion I had last month with another writer in our Substack community. We were talking about the incredible numbers Steam has been hitting, particularly the record of 41,666,455 concurrent users on October 12th. That kind of figure makes you want to dig into the charts and see what helped power the peak.

So, before we dive into the November game release preview, let’s take a look at the biggest question: what are all 41 million of us actually playing? Afterwards, we will dive into a couple of news stories from this week.

Understanding the Charts: Steam’s Concurrent Player Frenzy

First things first, let’s look at the data. As you can see on the chart, the green line, representing the total number of Steam Users, is currently sitting just under the 40M mark, bouncing through its daily peaks and troughs. It’s safe to say we will give it time before we see if the numbers will jump again, as Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 just came out today. New AAA releases always put a little juice into the concurrent user count.

Now, look at the most-played list below. It shows the games that cemented that 41.6M peak in October.

As you can clearly see, Counter-Strike 2, DOTA 2, and PUBG lead the table with the most users before Battlefield 6. These are the multiplayer behemoths keeping the lights on.

I remember seeing one comment from the community exclaiming they were surprised that Rust had so many users(106,808 players), even after hearing all the negative experiences people had in numerous YouTube videos. But that’s the thing about survival games, the drama keeps us coming back for more.

I am fully aware they’re undeniably popular programs leveraging the platform’s user base.

This Week in Gaming News: Delays and New Toys

While the numbers are interesting, two big news stories this week caught my attention, and they’ll both have massive ripples throughout the industry.

GTA 6 Delayed (Again!): The biggest shocker is that Grand Theft Auto 6 has been delayed until November 2026. This is a huge shift that impacts everything, as IGN reports, it immediately frees up the calendar for all the other Spring ‘26 games that were likely going to be steamrolled. It’s a bummer for fans, but great news for literally every other developer who just got a massive window of opportunity.
A New Steam Machine and Controller: Valve is back! They’ve announced a new Steam Controller and a refreshed Steam Machine (a PC/console hybrid) to bring your entire Steam library to the living room. They aim to bridge the gap between console simplicity and PC power. The first one flopped, sure, but with the success of the Steam Deck proving the power of SteamOS and Proton, this time it actually has games—which is a great sign for Mac-friendly titles and PC gaming in general!

October is officially in the rearview mirror, and I have to be honest: my hard drive got a rare break for other reasons, because October had literally thousands of new demos and releases available to play. Thank you, Steam Next Fest and Halloween!

The Brutal Truth About Being a Curator

As usual, I’m digging past the top charts to find the real treasures. The funny thing is, I had a couple of articles in the works one for the Steam Next Fest roundup and another for the October releases. Still, a big part of my mental energy got taken up by a new, ironic project: upskilling my AI abilities. I know, I know. I’ve been openly critical of AI’s role in creative spaces, but my IRL work requires me to adapt or risk losing relevance. It’s a complicated, self-aware stance, but I need to dive deep if I want to survive in the industry.

Steam Next Fest: The Halloween Hangover

First things first, let’s talk about the Steam Next Fest from October. It had a wildly different atmosphere compared to the June event. Maybe it was the lead-up to Halloween, but it felt heavily skewed toward the Horror genre and spooky themes. While everyone else was likely grabbing the newest big-budget titles, I was focusing on a unique angle. I am talking about games that promised a unique story-driven experience with a powerful narrative.

I managed to dive into a whole host of demos with this point of view. These were my absolute top picks from the event:

Skate Story: A surrealist, atmospheric action game about a demon made of glass trying to skate through a nightmarish underworld. Master your weight and motion to defeat vicious demons and save tortured souls.
Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era: A deep, turn-based strategy experience and true spiritual successor to the classic fantasy tactics series, featuring tactical overland exploration and a turn-based combat system.
MENACE: A turn-based tactical RPG from the developers of Battle Brothers, where you lead a strike force against an alien threat on a lawless frontier, training infantry and deploying vehicles in detailed battles.
Pathologic 3: This psychological horror-narrative game gives you just 12 days to save a town from a mysterious plague. Expect dark themes, brutal choices, and precise diagnosis while managing a town’s survival.
Relooted (Honorable Mention): An African futurist heist game where you recruit a crew and plan escape routes to reclaim real African artifacts from Western museums, featuring flow-based parkour and a compelling narrative.

A superhero workplace comedy where you play as a dispatcher, Robert Robertson, for a team of former villains. ARC Raiders: This extraction adventure is set on a future Earth ravaged by the mechanized threat, ARC. While everyone else is focused on the tension of extraction shooters, PC Gamer noted that it’s becoming “one of the chillest communities” out there, where solo players are choosing cooperation over conflict. Hey everyone!

Today marks the third day of the Steam Next Fest, and my hard drive is officially begging for mercy. There are literally thousands of games competing for attention, and this particular event feels heavily catered towards Survival and horror. You only have to look at the most downloaded demos to see what everyone’s scared of this week.

But as usual, I’m digging past the top charts to find the real treasures. While everyone else is screaming their way through the newest horror title, I’m focusing on the narrative-driven demos—the ones that tell a story you won’t forget.

On My Radar: Next Fest Deep Cuts

My current watchlist is full of promising demos. If you’re looking for something that stands out, here are just a few of the titles I’m hoping to get some hands-on time with this week:

Pathologic 3: The latest entry in the notoriously difficult and atmospheric survival-narrative series. Expect dark themes, brutal choices, and a world that will punish you for breathing wrong.
Skate Story: A psychedelic, surrealist skateboarding game where you literally skate through the Underworld as a demon made of glass. It’s more of an atmospheric adventure than a sports sim.
Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era: A return to classic turn-based strategy and fantasy RPG storytelling, appealing to that deep nostalgia for complex campaigns.
The Dark Rites of Arkham: A story-focused game clearly inspired by Lovecraft and the Cthulhu mythos, promising deep cosmic horror and unsettling mystery.
MENACE: A dark, atmospheric tactical RPG with a focus on squad-based combat and deep narrative consequences.
Tides of Tomorrow: An adventure game centered around exploration and a unique water-based world, promising a vast new narrative to uncover.

The aim is to produce a complete write-up and a possible video showcasing all the titles I played during the event.

I’m thrilled to bring you a brand new, recurring video series I call “Demos I Played This Week.” — I may change the title at some point, it still feels too generic.

The aim is to dive deep into game demos on Steam(Epic store & Humble Bundle included) that deserve your precious gaming time. The sheer volume of new titles coming out is dizzying, and this is where I do the hard work for you— my goal is to nudge you to try play a game in a different genre you never considered was worth your time.

This week’s premiere episode is now live, and it’s a phenomenal showcase of indie creativity:

The Superhero HR Nightmare: We tackle Dispatch, a hilarious and high-quality narrative game where you don’t play the hero, but the dispatcher managing a team of dysfunctional ex-supervillains. The comedic banter alone makes this demo worth playing—I was so hooked by the sharp dialogue that I immediately replayed it to see all the different outcomes.
Minimalist Zen Building: We step onto the tranquil shores of ISLANDERS: New Shores, a game that is the perfect antidote to stress. It’s a deep dive into a cozy puzzle where time melts away as you strategically place buildings to maximize your score. The only problem? The demo ended too soon!
The Tycoon Logistics Puzzle: We dive into Food Truck Empire, a strategy game that makes you think like an engineer and a chef. The fun challenge is designing the automated production line inside your truck, which is a surprisingly addictive and complex puzzle. I discuss the initial struggle I had figuring out the burger assembly line.
Isometric Stealth & Narrative: I explore the atmospheric world of Eriksholm: The Stolen Dream, an adventure that was a refreshing change of pace. Playing as the young protagonist, Hanna, as she searches for her brother, challenged me to be more mindful of character perspective in games.

It’s an episode packed with unique concepts and games that offer incredible depth, even in their demo state. If you love discovering new titles before they blow up, this is the series for you.

September is proving to be a wild ride. The games are coming in fast and furious, and it can be tough to keep up. But don't you worry, we at Dusty Gamer have been doing the heavy lifting and have curated a list of the coolest new demos out there. I've got all the details you need to know, from the premise to the key mechanics.

Our Demo Pack features over 30 demos, which we've categorized into the following categories: Real-time Strategy, First-person Shooters, Simulations, Racing/Sports, and Miscellaneous.

Now, for a few of my personal picks from the list! Over the last few weeks, I had time to play and record footage of the following demos in “my picks” category. My Picks

Eriksholm: The Stolen Dream
- This is a narrative-driven, isometric stealth game that feels like a classic animated movie. Set in a fictional Scandinavian city, you play as a young woman searching for her missing brother. The gameplay is focused on observation, using stealth to evade enemies, and using the unique skills of three different playable characters to solve puzzles and navigate the world.
Dispatch Demo
- If you're looking for something with a bit of a quirky twist, this is it. It's a superhero workplace comedy where you've been demoted from a hero to a dispatcher. Your job is to manage a team of ex-supervillains, strategize who to send on emergencies, and deal with all the office politics that come with a dysfunctional team.
Food Truck Empire Demo
- This is a cozy economic strategy game that lets you build and manage your own food truck empire. You can compose your own dishes, set up an automated assembly line in your truck, and even customize its look to attract customers. The goal is to expand your business and become a master of the culinary arts on wheels.
ISLANDERS: New Shores Demo
- A chill, minimalist city-builder that’s perfect for unwinding. The gameplay loop is simple but addictive: place buildings to rack up points, achieve a high score, and then move on to the next island. It’s a low-pressure game that scratches that city-building itch without any of the stress.

Jelly Troops

EA SPORTS™ Madden NFL 26

September 2025 Game Releases: My Wallet Cried, and My Backlog Laughed

September is well underway, and we are already deep into Hollow Knight: Silksong play-throughs and Borderlands 4 just released yesterday(11th September 2025). It’s been a crazy start to the month, and looking at the list of what’s coming up... I’m a little scared.

We have close to 120 games for this month’s list. That’s a lot, and compiling the full roundup at the end of the month is going to be a wild ride. That is a worry for future me, the great thing about so many releases is that we also get a ton of playable demos! We have over 10 demos just from this month alone, and our upcoming Demo Pack 001 is looking real fat right now. I hope to frame it in a way that encourages everyone to play something new outside their comfort zone.

So for this post, I will give you just a little taste of what to expect in our massive Demo Pack 001 and highlight some of the biggest releases of the month.

Demo Pack teaser:

Metal Eden: This is a high-octane sci-fi FPS that throws you into a deadly monolithic city. You play as the HYPER UNIT ASKA on a suicide mission to rescue humanity’s COREs from a city that has become a lethal trap.
Hirogami: A unique 3D action platformer set in a beautiful, vibrant origami world. You play as Tsubame, who can transform at will to solve puzzles and explore the environment on a quest to save the world from digital invaders.
JETRUNNER: If you ever wanted to combine Trackmania’s speed with Titanfall’s movement, this is the demo for you. It’s a parkour FPS with a cel-shaded art style, focusing on rich, expressive movement and tight gunplay as you race through its comic-book-like world.
Moros Protocol: Get ready to face the darkness in this pixel-painted sci-fi FPS roguelite. Stranded on a decaying warship, you’re stalked by horrors and must adapt and upgrade to survive.
Splatterbot: A wild, local multiplayer game for up to four players where the cleaning robots have gone rogue. The goal? Make the most mess! You’ll use your environment and power-ups to overwhelm your opponents with untidiness.
Baby Steps: This is the game for you if you love a good challenge and are a fan of quirky humor. It’s a physics-based walking simulator where you control the legs of an unemployed loner, learning to put one foot in front of the other to explore a strange world shrouded in mist.

September Highlights:

This month features a wide variety of genres, but the most dominant genres appear to be action, RPGs, and shooters. Survival horror and psychological horror are also well represented. There are also sports and racing games, strategy/tactics RPGs, adventure and narrative-driven games, platformers, and indie experimental games. Here is my list of interesting titles in no particular order:

Borderlands 4: The latest installment in the looter-shooter franchise takes you to the new planet of Kairos. You'll get to play as a new Vault Hunter with new abilities and an arsenal of billions of wild guns. The game also features new movement abilities like a double jump, glide, and a grapple hook, so you can traverse the world like never before.
Hollow Knight: Silksong: You play as Hornet, who is kidnapped and taken to the new kingdom of Pharloom. The game builds on the acclaimed Metroidvania formula with new combat mechanics, a quest system, and a crafting system, providing a fresh challenge for both new and veteran players.
Silent Hill f: This highly anticipated survival horror game returns the series to its roots, set in a hauntingly beautiful Japanese town in the 1960s. You'll follow the story of a high school student named Hinako, solving puzzles and fighting grotesque monsters as you navigate a world consumed by fog and psychological terror.
Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles: A brand new entry in the beloved tactics RPG series, set once again in the world of Ivalice. You'll command a new hero as a civil war rages across the land, weaving a complex political story with deep, grid-based combat.
NBA 2K26: The latest entry in the franchise promises to be a major step up with enhanced AI, improved help defense intelligence, and a new freelance engine that helps your teammates find you when you are off-ball. It looks to offer a more realistic and authentic basketball experience.
EA Sports FC 26: A new entry in the long-running soccer franchise. This year's game focuses on a more realistic feel with tighter, slicker dribbling, and a new option for powerful low shots. The game also features a range of new play styles that are designed to make it feel more authentic.
Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection: This is a dream come true for fans of the original games. It's a collection of several of the early fighting games in the series, remastered by the team at Digital Eclipse. It’s a perfect way to experience the franchise's brutal origins all over again.
Agatha Christie - Death on the Nile: A new adventure and narrative-driven game that puts you in the shoes of both Hercule Poirot and a private detective. You’ll investigate a murder on a cruise ship and solve a series of mysteries that will eventually lead you to a terrible crime scene.
Dying Light: The Beast: This new entry in the survival horror series puts you back in the role of Kyle Crane, who has escaped from the Baron after enduring painful experiments. You’ll have to struggle to control the zombie DNA within you as you seek revenge.
Pac-Man World 2: Re-Pac: A classic is back with a fresh coat of paint! This is a complete remake of the original platformer, with modern graphics, expanded levels, and quality-of-life improvements. It's a perfect dose of nostalgia for fans of the original.
Cronos: The New Dawn: A new third-person survival horror game with a unique twist: you can travel back in time. You’ll explore a town ravaged by a devastating outbreak and must use your ability to move through time to gather information and find a way to survive.
Mamorukun ReCurse!: An explosive "cute 'em up" that takes you into The Netherworld. It’s an adventure filled with bizarre creatures and a unique "Curse Bullets" mechanic that lets you adjust the difficulty as you go.

Welcome back to the ol' Substack! After digging through a plethora of news, especially because of Gamescom 2025, I was able to unearth this trove of game releases you might have missed. For us returning gamers, August felt like a full-blown reunion tour. We saw some classics get a shiny new coat of paint, from the tactical espionage of Metal Gear Solid Delta to the brutal, chainsaw-fueled action of Gears of War: Reloaded. And let's not forget the prequel to an old favorite, Mafia: The Old Country, that took us back to the glory days.

This month didn't have a ton of demos or many notable new releases, but that's because we covered the bulk of those in the Gamescom post. Instead, I've curated a collection featuring some of the coolest and most interesting games that were released before and after Gamescom. You can expect to find a summary with each trailer, as well as links to their website and social media pages, so you can get a real feel for what they're all about.

Surprise! Dusty Gamer with another post in the same week, bet you didn't see that coming.

I'm trying something new this week. We’re so often focused on what’s dropping on our digital storefronts, but sometimes the real buzz comes from the big-time showcases. I won't always cover these big events in-depth, as I am just trying this out for now, but I wanted to make sure we didn't miss out on some of the cool stuff that just dropped during Gamescom.

This post will be an experiment where I put all the important trailers in one place for you to check out. I’ve also rounded up some of the most interesting demos that caught my eye. So, here's my first-ever roundup for "Game Show Gauntlet" from Gamescom 2025!

Opening Night Trailer and Highlights

The big showcase was jam-packed with reveals. Some of these are for major franchises we know and love, while others are new faces that look incredibly promising. The following list is in no particular order:

Bubsy 4D:

The infamous bobcat returns! This new 3D platformer promises to blend nostalgic charm with modern movement mechanics in a fun, fur-filled adventure.

Ninja Gaiden 4:

This surprise reveal introduces a new protagonist, Yakumo, who will face off against series icon Ryu Hayabusa. The new entry promises a mix of familiar and new weapons, along with an easier "Hero Mode" for those of us who don't have the reflexes we used to.

The Outer Worlds 2:

The latest trailer for the highly anticipated sequel focused on the quirky party companions that will join your crew. It seems the game is doubling down on its unique characters and humor, which is a great sign.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle:

The new trailer for this game focused on a new DLC called "The Order of Giants," which takes Indy back to Rome. It looks to deliver more of the classic action, puzzles, and thrilling adventure we've come to expect.

John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando:

A new co-op FPS that looks like a love letter to 80s action and horror flicks. You team up with friends to take on hordes of monsters in a game that promises visceral action and over-the-top humor.

Hollow Knight: Silksong:

It's finally happening! A new trailer confirmed a September 4th release date and showed off the new protagonist, Hornet, along with new mechanics like a crafting system, multiple towns, and a more structured quest system.

Silent Hill f:

A new entry in the psychological horror franchise, this game is set in a haunting Japanese town consumed by a strange fog. The trailer gave us a glimpse into a terrifying new nightmare with all the classic Silent Hill dread.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword:

This isn't a Soulslike, but rather a new action game with gracefully fluid combat that makes you feel like a master swordsman. It’s a modern and very rewarding take on the classic PS2 series, with a focus on fast-paced, film-like duels.

Monster Hunter Wilds x Final Fantasy 14 Online crossover:

A collaboration for the ages! The new Monster Hunter will get a crossover with one of FFXIV's hardest bosses, Omega, along with Chocobos. In return, FFXIV will get to fight Monster Hunter Wilds' flagship monster, Arkveld.

World of Warcraft: Midnight:

Blizzard has fully unveiled the next WoW expansion, which brings highly requested features like player housing, a new playable race, and a new Demon Hunter specialization. It's an exciting time for anyone still flying the Alliance or Horde flag.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4:

The popular RTS franchise is officially returning to its roots with a massive new campaign. It will be the first time the Adeptus Mechanicus faction is playable, and the game promises a brutal and epic real-time strategy experience.

Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight:

A new LEGO game that creatively mashes up iconic characters from different Batman movies and comics into a single coherent story. The combat is even inspired by the Arkham series, making it a great title for both fans of LEGO and the Caped Crusader.

Death by Scrolling:

The new pixelated action game from Ron Gilbert, the creator of Monkey Island! In this humorous title, you choose one of five characters to survive purgatory by outrunning death and collecting resources to pay the ferryman.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2:

After a long and complicated development cycle, the game is looking great. The new trailer showed off a polished, combat-focused RPG set in modern-day Seattle with multiple classes and a compelling plot.

Valor Mortis:

From the creators of Ghostrunner comes this single-player, first-person soulslike. Set in a dark, alt-history Napoleonic era, you play as a soldier who has returned from the dead with new powers.

Project Spectrum:

A free-to-play tactical thriller FPS with a unique twist. You lead a team into reality-warped zones to hunt monsters, but a powerful creature controlled by another player can turn the tables and hunt you instead.

Cronos: The New Dawn:

A new third-person survival horror game from the developers of Layers of Fear. The trailer showcased terrifying creatures and the core mechanic of using time as both your deadliest weapon and your worst enemy.

La Divina Commedia:

This dark fantasy action-RPG from the creators of Enotria: The Last Song is a new take on Dante's classic work. The game features hack-and-slash combat, procedurally generated dungeons, and a morality system tied to the Seven Deadly Sins.

Enshrouded:

The popular co-op survival RPG revealed a new teaser for its seventh update. The trailer, titled "Wake of the Water," hinted at new biomes and mysteries to explore within the game's expansive world.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance II Legacy of the Forge:

The second major expansion for Kingdom Come: Deliverance II was announced with a trailer. This DLC will allow players to take on the role of a master blacksmith and rebuild a legendary forge.

Resident Evil: Requiem:

This new entry in the Resident Evil franchise is going back to its survival horror roots. The trailer revealed a new protagonist and a relentless stalker enemy, with players able to switch between first and third-person perspectives to navigate the terror.

Europa Universalis V:

Fans of grand strategy rejoice! The highly anticipated fifth installment in the Europa Universalis series was officially announced with a new cinematic trailer. It promises a refined engine and deeper diplomatic and military systems.

Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion:

The open-world mech shooter revealed a new trailer at the event, along with a free demo that is available now. The demo lets players experience the first nine chapters of the story, and progress will carry over to the final game.

Ghost of Yotei:

A new trailer for the standalone sequel to Ghost of Tsushima was shown, revealing new protagonist Atsu. The biggest news, however, was the return of the popular co-op multiplayer mode, Legends, as a free update for all players in 2026.

Cult of the Lamb: Woolhaven:

The beloved indie game revealed a new expansion coming in early 2026. This full-length update will introduce new dungeons and a mysterious, snow-covered realm where you must endure the harsh winter and help rebuild a lost civilization.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 7:

The new trailer for the latest entry in the franchise showed off new maps and a fresh campaign reveal.

Masters of the Universe Dragon Pearl of Destruction:

This is a side-scrolling beat-'em-up that’s a love letter to fans of the classic show, with gameplay reminiscent of retro classics like Streets of Rage and TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge.

Zero Parades:

From the developers of Disco Elysium, this new title is a spy-themed CRPG where you must navigate a new, complex world to complete your mission.

Demos You Can Play Right Now!

What’s a major game event without a slew of demos to try out? Gamescom 2025 has a bunch of titles with free trials and playable demos available right now on Steam. Here are a few that piqued my interest.

Food Truck Empire: An economic strategy and tycoon game where you build and manage your own food truck business. It looks like a great way to live out your culinary dreams without any of the real-life grease.
Moros Protocol: A pixel-painted sci-fi FPS roguelite where you’re stranded on a decaying warship, stalked by horrors. It’s a fast-paced game that promises a brutal but rewarding challenge with a unique visual style.
Dispatch: A superhero workplace comedy about a hero whose mech suit is destroyed, forcing him to take a job as a dispatcher. It’s a charming premise that offers a fresh take on the superhero genre.
Is This Seat Taken?: A cozy and relaxing puzzle game about helping little shape-people find a place to sit. It’s a no-pressure experience that's all about figuring out how to get everyone seated with their own unique requirements.
Dune: Awakening: This open-world survival MMO is offering a free trial until Sunday, August 24th! If you’ve been on the fence about whether to brave the dangers of Arrakis, now is the perfect time to give it a shot.
Military Logistics Simulator: A first-person simulation game that puts you in the boots of a quartermaster, managing vehicles and supply lines in a war-torn region. It offers a unique perspective on military operations.
Restaurant's Demo: A surprisingly charming management game where you play as a rat who has taken over a struggling restaurant. You can dress your rat up in fantastic outfits while you take orders, cook meals, and try to restore its former glory.
The Berlin Apartment: A unique narrative-driven puzzle game that takes you through different historical moments in one single apartment in Berlin. The demo lets you explore stories from 1989, 1933, and 2020.

Hey there, fellow gamers! 👋 I'm back with a fresh batch of titles to fill your backlogs. I know what you're thinking—it's already mid-August, and this recap of July releases is later than usual. As I mentioned before, July was an absolute whirlwind with life and other projects. To keep from completely falling apart, I had to put my July gaming recap on hold. Hey everyone, Another month is here, and boy, did time fly by! We’re still busy with the daily grind of life, work, and more projects, which meant my game time this July was pretty limited. But that's okay, sometimes the best gaming moments are the ones you have to squeeze in.

The plan for August is to try to finally finish up my July game recap and, with any luck, get at least one video put together for you all. Wish me luck with that!

Now, before we get to the main event, if you're like me and love a good bargain (or, better yet, a free game), I’ve made a quick list of some titles you can grab right now. Mafia: The Old Country: A major AAA crime saga and prequel entry in the acclaimed Mafia series. If you're a fan of those deep, narrative-driven open-world experiences with a classic mob vibe, this is a definite one to watch.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Hinokami Chronicles 2: A highly anticipated anime-based fighting and story-driven game that continues the tale from the popular Demon Slayer series. Fans of the show should check this out for some slick, fast-paced action.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater: I can't be the only one excited about this! A modern remake of a classic tactical espionage action game praised for its narrative and stealth gameplay. The chance to relive this masterpiece on modern hardware is almost too good to be true.
Lost Soul Aside: A high-profile indie action RPG noted for its stunning visuals and fast-paced combat. This game has been on my radar for a while and is often considered to be of AAA quality. It’s exciting to see it finally get a release date.

Hey everyone, this is your pal here at Dusty Gamer checking in with you! Apologies if my output feels a little dustier than usual this month so far. Life's been throwing a few extra boss battles my way, and the pressures of other projects and business commitments mean my gaming hours (and thus, my writing time) have taken a bit of a hit. But fear not, even though my attention is on other projects right now, I am still committed to making this adventure work!

Despite the slight setback and slowdown on my end, June was a fantastic month for Dusty Gamer. We added even more incredible subscribers to our ranks – we're now at a lucky 14 subscribers! That's right, a baker's dozen of you awesome folks have chosen to subscribe, and I can't thank you enough for hopping on this video game-inspired journey with me. Your support genuinely fuels the pixel fire within, and I promise to bring even better quality content each week in the coming months once things settle down. When I'm fully back in the swing of things, I'll also focus on producing another video or two for those of you who prefer to watch and listen to me ramble! I may experiment with the format, focusing on two or three games, and shorten the video length to 10 minutes.
